Simp
Etymology
Originally short for "simpleton" (early 20th century), and used in hip-hop as the opposite of a "pimp." Internet meme culture revived and reshaped it around 2019–2020 — with phrases like "simp nation" — into a term for a man overly deferential to someone he desires.
noun · /SIMP/
Someone who lavishes excessive attention, deference, or devotion on a person they’re attracted to, often getting little back.
What it names
It names one-sided romantic over-investment — bending over backwards for someone’s approval past the point of self-respect. The word is usually an accusation of lost dignity, though it’s also worn ironically ("simping" over a celebrity), and it carries a running debate about where devotion ends and self-abasement begins.
Example
He drove three hours to bring her soup for a cold she’d already recovered from — total simp behavior.
Related idea
Close to glazing, but simping is romantic or sexual devotion, while glazing is over-the-top praise of anyone admired.
