Tryhard
Etymology
Gaming slang from the late 2000s, describing a player who sweats over casual or unranked matches as if a championship were on the line. It broadened into general use for anyone whose effort is embarrassingly out of proportion to the occasion.
noun · /TRY-hard/
Someone who invests conspicuously disproportionate effort, especially in a setting meant to be casual.
What it names
It names a social miscalibration: bringing tournament-level intensity to a friendly game, or grinding hard at something everyone else is doing for fun. The critique isn’t effort itself but its mismatch with the low-stakes context — reading the room wrong by caring too visibly.
Example
It’s a charity fun run, but there’s always one tryhard in full race kit sprinting off the line.
Related idea
Not simply ambitious: ambition is effort aimed at real stakes, while a tryhard misjudges a casual setting as one that warrants maximum effort.
