Sweaty
Etymology
Gaming slang that spread in the 2010s, picturing a player working hard enough to break a sweat over a casual or unranked match. The noun “sweat” for such a player and the verb “to sweat” a game came along with it. It has since loosened into wider use for anyone whose strain is a bit too visible.
adjective · /SWET-ee/
Trying so hard that the effort becomes conspicuous and slightly off-putting, especially in a casual setting.
What it names
It names visible over-investment — the way maximum effort in a low-stakes context reads as a small social misfire. To call a player or a match “sweaty” is to say the intensity has outrun the occasion, as if someone were literally perspiring over something meant to be light.
Example
It’s supposed to be a chill lobby, but every match turns sweaty the second someone starts min-maxing.
Related idea
Close to tryhard, but sweaty describes the quality of the effort — its palpable strain — where tryhard labels the person.
