Serving
Etymology
From Black and Latino LGBTQ ballroom culture, where to “serve” — serve face, serve body, serve realness — meant to present something for the judges’ appraisal on the runway. It spread through drag culture and shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race.
verb · /SUR-ving/
Presenting a striking, commanding look or performance — “serving looks,” “serving face.”
What it names
It names the act of delivering a look with full intention, as if presenting it for judgment — the confidence of putting yourself forward to be admired. Whatever follows completes the verdict: serving looks, serving attitude, serving realness.
