Querencia
Etymology
From Spanish, built on the verb “querer” (to want, to love) plus the suffix “-encia.” In bullfighting it names the part of the ring where the bull instinctively retreats to feel secure and gather its strength before charging. That technical sense broadened into the everyday idea of a personal stronghold or home ground.
noun · /keh-REN-see-ah/
A place where one feels safe, at home, and able to draw strength to be one’s truest self.
What it names
The specific spot — a chair, a town, a stretch of coast — from which you gather your power and feel most authentically yourself.
Example
After the divorce, her grandmother’s kitchen became her querencia — the one room where she felt like herself again.
Related idea
Unlike a plain sanctuary, which stresses safety and refuge, querencia emphasizes the strength and identity you actively draw from the place, not just shelter from what’s outside.
