Gemütlichkeit

German, from "gemütlich" ("cozy, agreeable"), rooted in "Gemüt" ("mind, soul, temperament"). So the coziness is as much an inner disposition as an outward comfort. It is often marketed as untranslatable, though Dutch "gezelligheid" and Danish "hygge" name closely overlapping ideas.

  1. noun · /guh-MOOT-likh-kite/

A feeling of warm, cozy comfort and easy belonging, usually shared with others.

The snug, unhurried contentment of a place or gathering where you feel completely at ease.

The little tavern, with its low beams and candlelight, radiated pure gemütlichkeit.

Compared with hygge, which leans toward quiet intimacy, gemütlichkeit stretches to warm, sociable conviviality as well.
