Girl dinner
Etymology
Coined on TikTok in May 2023 by Olivia Maher, who described a plate of bread and cheese as a "medieval peasant" meal; "girl dinner" caught on within days, often set to a jingle by user Karma Carr.
noun · /GURL DIN-er/
A meal assembled from an ad hoc pile of snacks and odds and ends rather than a cooked dish.
What it names
It names the low-effort, no-recipe plate — cheese, crackers, olives, a handful of grapes — eaten (often happily) instead of cooking. It reframes not-cooking as a valid, even charming, choice rather than a failure.
Example
Too tired to cook, so it’s girl dinner: pickles, a hunk of cheddar, and the last of the crackers.
Related idea
Compare grazing, which is the eating pattern; girl dinner is the specific, self-aware plate — and the permission to call it a meal.
