Bagholder
Etymology
From the older idiom “left holding the bag” (stuck with the blame or the debt), compressed into a noun in stock-market slang. It was revived and spread widely through crypto and the WallStreetBets community during the 2020–2021 trading boom.
noun · /BAG-hohl-der/
Someone left holding an asset whose value has collapsed, stuck with losses after others got out.
What it names
It names the loser’s end of a bad trade: the person still holding when the price craters, often the last to buy in before the fall. It carries a note of blame — the bagholder either bought the hype too late or refused to cut losses in time.
Example
When the token rugged, thousands of latecomers were left as bagholders overnight.
Related idea
A bagholder is often a paper hands who held too long — someone who neither sold early nor had the position ever recover.
