Yapping
Etymology
From "yap," the sharp, repetitive bark of a small dog (17th century), long applied to incessant human chatter. The gerund "yapping," along with "yap session" and the self-label "yapper," surged as internet slang around 2022–2023.
verb · /YAP-ing/
Talking at length, often energetically and about very little.
What it names
It names talk enjoyed for its own sake more than its content — the long, digressive monologue of a self-aware chatterbox. The tone is usually fond and teasing, and often turned on oneself: announcing a "yap session" is permission to ramble.
Example
Sorry for yapping — anyway, that’s the whole saga of my week.
Related idea
Lighter than rambling, which suggests you’ve lost the thread; yapping is often deliberate, affectionate over-talking.
