Ya’aburnee

Arabic يقبرني, literally "you bury me," expressing the hope that the beloved will be the one to bury you rather than the reverse. It is used as an endearment, a dark-sweet superlative of attachment.

  1. noun · /yah-ah-BOOR-nee/

The tender wish to die before a loved one, so that you never have to live without them.

It compresses a whole declaration of devotion into one word — a way of saying “I could not bear to outlive you.”

“Ya’aburnee,” her grandmother would murmur, meaning she hoped never to see a world without her.

Where saudade is longing for someone already absent, ya’aburnee is the pre-emptive dread of that absence — love measured by the refusal to survive the loss.
