The Meta
Etymology
Short for "metagame" — playing the game about the game, using knowledge beyond its literal rules. The popular backronym "Most Effective Tactics Available" is a later folk invention, not the true origin; flag it as false. "Meta" traces to Greek "metá" ("beyond, after").
noun · /MEH-tuh/
The set of strategies currently considered most effective within a competitive game.
What it names
It captures the moving consensus about "the best way to play" — a self-referential layer above the rules that shifts as players and updates change it.
Example
After the patch, the whole meta shifted, and last month’s dominant strategy became nearly unplayable.
Related idea
Distinct from a Schelling point, a focal choice people converge on absent coordination; the meta is an evolving strategic consensus that updates continuously chase.
