Sumud

Arabic صمود (ṣumūd), "steadfastness," from a root meaning to hold firm or resist. It became a central concept in Palestinian identity and political life, describing the determination to remain and persist under pressure.

  1. noun · /soo-MOOD/

Steadfast, patient perseverance and rootedness in the face of hardship or displacement.

Endurance as an act of quiet resistance — simply staying, holding on, and refusing to be uprooted.

For the farmers, tending the old olive trees year after year was an expression of sumud.

Broader than resilience, which describes bouncing back from shocks, sumud is specifically about staying put and holding ground as a form of dignity and defiance.
