Solvency

From Latin solvere, "to loosen, release, pay off" (from se-, "apart," plus luere, "to loosen, release"). To be solvent is to be able to "release" yourself from your obligations. The same root gives us dissolve and solve.

  1. noun · /SOL-ven-see/

The state of owning enough in total to cover everything you owe.

It is the deepest test of financial health — not whether you can pay this month, but whether your assets exceed your debts at all.

The audit confirmed the charity’s solvency: its reserves comfortably outweighed its liabilities.

The opposite is insolvency, when debts finally exceed everything you own.
