Snafu

A World War II military acronym standing, in its printable form, for "Situation Normal: All Fouled Up." The joke buried in it is bleak and precise: the mess is not exceptional but routine — this is simply how things go. It entered civilian speech from soldiers’ slang and lost its acronym feel, becoming an ordinary noun.

  1. noun · /sna-FOO/

A confused or botched situation, especially one caused by disorganization.

A compact word for a mess that has gone wrong through ordinary chaos rather than a single dramatic failure — with a built-in shrug of dark humor.

A scheduling snafu double-booked the room, so the two teams stood in the hallway negotiating.

A kerfuffle is a noisy fuss over something; a snafu is an actual operational tangle, cynical about its own inevitability.
