Shitposting

The term grew out of 2000s message boards such as Something Awful and 4chan, where “shitpost” labeled content of aggressively low quality — sometimes as sabotage, sometimes as art. Unlike ordinary bad posting, shitposting is intentional, its worthlessness the whole point. It went mainstream in the 2010s as a self-aware style.

  1. noun · /SHIT-pohs-ting/

Posting deliberately low-effort, absurd, or nonsensical content to derail or amuse.

Irony-soaked noise posted for its own sake, resisting earnest interpretation.

The brand’s account abandoned press-release tone and started shitposting surreal memes at 2 a.m.

Shitposting is defined by absurdist noise rather than provocation; trolling wants a reaction, but a shitpost is often content to be pointless.
