Pick-me
Etymology
From the plea "pick me!" The "pick-me girl" archetype spread via Black Twitter, notably the 2016 hashtag #TweetLikeAPickMe, and later broadened on TikTok to any attention- or approval-seeker of any gender.
noun · /PIK-mee/
Someone who courts approval — often male approval — by putting down their own peers or gender.
What it names
It names the move of seeking validation by positioning yourself as "not like the others" — the woman who brags she "gets along better with guys" or isn’t "dramatic like other girls." It captures approval-seeking that works by throwing your own group under the bus.
Example
Calling every other woman "high-maintenance" to impress the guys is peak pick-me behavior.
Related idea
Distinct from a people-pleaser, who accommodates everyone; a pick-me seeks approval specifically by contrast, at their peers’ expense.
