OP
Etymology
A gaming abbreviation of overpowered, describing a unit or weapon strong enough to unbalance play. It generalized into wider internet use for anything unfairly effective. (As a separate initialism, “OP” also means “original poster” on forums — see the other sense.)
adjective · /oh-PEE/
Short for “overpowered” — so strong as to be unbalanced or unfair, in a game or by extension anywhere.
What it names
It names the specific problem of something being too good: a character, tool, or tactic so dominant it distorts the whole contest around it. Borrowed out of games, calling a strategy or product OP flags that it wins so decisively it feels like it breaks the rules.
Example
That opening move is basically OP — whoever plays it first almost always wins.
Related idea
Distinct from merely good: something good is strong within the rules, while something OP is strong enough to break them.
noun · /oh-PEE/
The “original poster” — the person who started a thread or discussion.
What it names
On forums and comment sections it identifies the author of the original post, so replies can refer back to them clearly. It’s essential connective tissue in threaded conversation, letting a discussion track who asked the question everyone is answering.
Example
OP never came back to say whether the fix actually worked.
