Old money
Etymology
From the long-standing distinction between old money (inherited, established wealth) and new money (recently earned). It became a TikTok fashion aesthetic around 2022–2023, overlapping with “quiet luxury” and amplified by shows like Succession.
noun · /OHLD MUH-nee/
An understated aesthetic of inherited wealth — quality fabrics, no logos, quiet signals of class.
What it names
It names a look that broadcasts wealth by refusing to broadcast it: the deliberate absence of branding, the posture of having nothing to prove. As an aesthetic it’s largely aspirational cosplay of a class most of its adopters weren’t born into.
Example
The whole outfit was old money — cashmere, loafers, and not a single visible label.
Related idea
Nearly identical in look to quiet luxury, but different in claim: quiet luxury names the stealth-wealth product category, old money the inherited-class fantasy it evokes.
