Nunchi
Etymology
Korean, 눈치, connected to "nun" ("eye") — roughly "eye-measure" or "eye-sense." It names an esteemed social art: quickly reading faces, tone, and atmosphere to act appropriately. To have "quick nunchi" is a compliment, while to lack it is a real social failing.
noun · /NOON-chee/
The skill of sensing what others are feeling and thinking in order to read a situation.
What it names
The quiet social intelligence of gauging a room’s mood and unspoken dynamics in real time.
Example
She had the nunchi to change the subject the instant the room went quiet.
Related idea
It overlaps with empathy, but nunchi is tactical and situational — reading the room to navigate it, not just feeling with others.
