Left on read
Etymology
From the "Read" receipt introduced by iMessage in 2011 and other messaging apps, which shows the sender when a message has been seen. "Left on read" names being knowingly ignored after that confirmation, and became common slang as read receipts spread through the 2010s.
phrase · /left on REED/
Having your message marked as seen but deliberately not replied to.
What it names
It names the peculiar modern sting of the read receipt — knowing your message was opened and consciously set aside, turning silence into a legible, timestamped snub.
Example
I could see she’d read it hours ago — left on read, no reply.
Related idea
Distinct from ghosting, which is disappearing entirely; being left on read is a single, visible non-reply, made to sting by the read receipt.
