Jugaad
Etymology
Hindi (जुगाड़), also used in Punjabi and other North Indian languages, with roots that are not precisely settled. It can also name the jury-rigged vehicles improvised in rural India. In recent years business writers have adopted it as a term for "frugal innovation," sometimes stretching its original street-level sense.
noun · /joo-GAHD/
A frugal, improvised fix or workaround that solves a problem with scarce resources.
What it names
The scrappy ingenuity of making do — hacking together a good-enough solution from whatever is available.
Example
With no proper stand, we rigged a jugaad out of books and tape to prop up the laptop.
Related idea
A hack can be merely clever; jugaad specifically implies doing more with less, under real constraints of money or resources.
