IYKYK

An initialism of the phrase “if you know, you know,” which spread across Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok in the late 2010s. It became a caption convention for posts hinting at experiences the poster won’t elaborate.

  1. phrase · /eye-why-kay-why-kay/

Short for “if you know, you know” — a tag marking a reference that insiders will get and outsiders won’t.

It flags something as in-group knowledge without explaining it, converting a shared joke, place, or experience into a small badge of belonging. Part of the point is the exclusion: it signals that a full account exists but is being deliberately withheld from those not already in on it.

They still have the original menu if you ask the right person — iykyk.

The flip side of gatekeeping: gatekeeping guards access aggressively, while iykyk simply notes that a boundary exists and winks.
