Humblebrag

Coined by the comedy writer Harris Wittels, who launched the @Humblebrag Twitter account in 2010 and a book in 2012 cataloguing the form. He defined it precisely: a brag wrapped in a grievance, like complaining about the exhaustion of constant flattery. The word filled an obvious gap and entered dictionaries within a few years.

  1. noun · /HUM-buhl-brag/

A boast disguised as a complaint or a show of false modesty.

Bragging that launders itself through fake humility to dodge the social cost of showing off.

“So annoyed I can never find jeans that fit my marathon legs” is a textbook humblebrag.

A humblebrag hides pride inside a complaint, whereas virtue signalling advertises one’s goodness; both perform for an audience while denying they are performing.
