Glow-up
Etymology
The exact origin is unclear, but "glow up" grew out of the idea of a person "glowing," and spread on social media in the mid-2010s, largely as a before-and-after hashtag. It contrasts with a "glow-down," the reverse.
noun · /GLOH-up/
A dramatic positive transformation, especially in appearance, style, or confidence.
What it names
It names the satisfying arc of visible self-improvement — the before-and-after in which someone comes into their own. Beyond looks, it can mark a leap in poise or circumstances, and it frames change as a form of quiet triumph, often after a hard stretch.
Example
She came back from her year abroad with a serious glow-up — new haircut, new confidence, whole new energy.
Related idea
More holistic than a makeover, which is usually a single styling session; a glow-up implies real growth over time.
