GG
Etymology
From competitive online gaming, where players type "gg" (good game) in chat as a match ends — a convention entrenched by 1990s and 2000s titles like StarCraft and Counter-Strike. "gg" and the emphatic "ggwp" (good game, well played) later spread beyond gaming as shorthand for "it’s over."
interjection · /jee-JEE/
"Good game" — a gracious acknowledgment, typed or said at the end of a contest, that it’s over or was well played.
What it names
A tiny ritual of sportsmanship compressed to two letters: the handshake at the buzzer. It also flexes into resignation and irony — "gg" can concede a lost cause ("well, gg") long before any literal game is involved.
Example
The other team scored in the final second and someone in the group chat just typed "gg."
Related idea
When used sarcastically it edges toward cope, but gg concedes the outcome rather than rationalizing it.
