Demure

The older adjective demure (reserved, modest; from Old French, ultimately linked to Latin maturus, "ripe, mature") was revived as slang by Jools Lebron in an August 2024 TikTok — "very demure, very mindful" — describing her workplace look. The catchphrase went viral and turned demure into an ironic tag for any modest-seeming act.

  1. adjective · /dih-MYOOR/

Performing understated modesty and mindfulness, now usually with heavy irony.

It names a knowing performance of restraint — presenting yourself as tasteful and considerate while winking at how staged that presentation is. It gives ironic cover for ordinary, unglamorous choices reframed as classy.

I only brought a small salad to the potluck — very demure, very mindful.

The ironic opposite of sibling brat; brat flaunts mess while demure performs restraint — often the same person toggling between them.
