Cope

From the ordinary verb cope (to manage under strain), turned into a jeering noun in imageboard and online-argument culture in the 2010s, especially on 4chan, where calling a rival’s argument “cope” dismisses it as self-comforting denial rather than engaging with it.

  1. noun · /KOHP/

A dismissive charge that someone is in denial — rationalizing a loss or an unwelcome truth rather than accepting it.

It names a specific move in an argument: refusing to engage with your opponent’s reasoning and instead diagnosing it as self-comfort, a story they tell themselves to soften a defeat. Reaching for it lets you reframe the other side’s confidence as fragility — though it works just as well as a thought-terminating dodge.

Telling everyone the stock will bounce back next quarter is pure cope.

Distinct from denial: denial is a psychological state you may not notice you’re in, while cope is an accusation someone throws at you from outside.
