Apparatchik

From Russian apparátchik, "an agent of the apparát" — the apparatus, meaning the machinery of the Communist Party. The Russian ultimately borrows apparat from Latin apparatus ("equipment, preparation"). Coined for the Soviet party official, the word has since spread to describe any faceless organization man, dryly and usually with contempt.

  1. noun · /ah-puh-RAH-chik/

A loyal, unquestioning functionary of a large political organization or bureaucracy.

It names the human component of a political machine — the operative whose defining trait is not conviction or talent but reliable service to the apparatus.

He had risen not through vision but through decades as a diligent apparatchik who never once broke ranks.

An ideologue is driven by fervent belief in a doctrine; an apparatchik is driven by loyalty to the organization, whatever it currently believes. One serves the idea, the other serves the machine.
